HP LaserJet 4050n – Network Ready Device with Envelope Feeder

Boasting both networking capabilities and a high monthly duty cycle, as well as rarely seen features such as a very high capacity envelope feeder, the HP LaserJet 4050n offers unique solutions for small to medium sized offices in need of printing output in high volume on media types other than your standard letter and legal sizes.

With a 75 envelope feeder built in to the HP LaserJet 4050n, as well as an advertised maximum monthly duty cycle of 65,000 printed pages, offices or home businesses dealing with a large amount of snail mail will be in envelope heaven. Standard paper handling capacities are decent as well with the device, totaling 600 sheets worth of storage capacity composed of a single 500 sheet tray along with a 100 sheet priority slot.

Thanks to the help of ceramic technology, the HP LaserJet 4050n offers an Instant On feature which means zero warm up time, and a first page out time of only 13 seconds. Regular print speeds run at up to 17 pages per minute onto letter sized paper, placing the unit somewhere in the middle of its class. It is, however, high up there concerning raw size.

With a footprint of 19 in x 15 in x 14 in (W x D x H), the HP LaserJet 4050n stands out as a heavier model. This is mostly due to its age, as current printers on the market run much sleeker, and come as light as half this unit’s weight of 43 lbs.

Standard memory included is a decent 8 MBs, which should keep all text document related projects running along optimally. However, for complex projects, internal DIMM slots make memory upgrades up to 192 MBs possible for minimal slowdown. Also upgradable is the unit’s paper storage capacity, with a single 500 sheet tray available for purchase separately that brings the units potential paper capacity up to an impressive 1,100 sheets total. Output capacity is locked at 300 sheets, with 250 sheets up top, and 50 in the rear.

With a rear output tray, a straight through paper path option is made possible. This is especially useful for the envelope users who don’t wish to crease or bend their product. An optional hard disk worth 3.2 GBs is a great choice when permanent, on board storage is required for those who print the same thing often, or are transporting the device to a new location.

Built in wired Ethernet capabilities make the HP LaserJet 4050n network ready, and its sturdy build and monthly duty cycle make it perfect as a backup printer for larger offices due to its abilities for mass output. Unfortunately, though the unit is network ready, it is equipped only with Parallel and serial ports for single computer connectivity. No USB port is incorporated into the hardware whatsoever.

While the HP LaserJet 4050n is a fairly standard device on many fronts, its envelope feeder makes it a great option as a special media type only workgroup unit for offices that have a frequent demand for abnormal paper sizes.
