HP Laserjet 1300 Print Driver and Vista?

Hi there.
I can’t install my ‘Old’ HP Laser-jet 1300 mono printer, to a new’ish PC with Vista Home Premium. Am I right that HP no longer support this printer and are telling me to buy a new one?
Please, is there anyone in this world who can help, as I’ve spent the best part of two weeks trying to get it to work? Even tried ‘PrintDriver’ with no success and don’t want to pay until I’m sure it works first.

The support white paper which goes with the release notes say that this is a Vista driver and the PCL6 release will support your Laserjet 1300.
